Sweden runs more than a hundred bachelor’s programmes and well over a thousand master’s programmes in English, with particular depth in engineering, computing, sustainability, design, business and the life sciences. Teaching leans on group projects, seminars and independent work rather than long exam marathons, and students have easy access to their lecturers. For Indian students who want to build practical, analytical skills in a technical or research-heavy field, it is one of Europe’s more rewarding choices.
The trade-off is cost and structure. Non-EU students pay tuition, must show a fixed monthly maintenance amount for the residence permit, and from June 2026 face a weekly cap on term-time work plus minimum credit targets each year. Admissions run through one national portal with firm deadlines, so starting around ten months before your intended August start gives you the best chance of a smooth application and permit.
You will find English-taught master’s options across technology, engineering, business, public policy, sustainability and health, so you are not limited to a handful of courses.
Classes reward discussion, teamwork and independent research, which helps you build problem-solving skills employers value rather than just memorising for exams.

In Sweden tuition is set per programme, so costs vary widely even within one university. Plan with ranges and always confirm the exact fee on the programme page.

Because tuition is significant, scholarships matter in Sweden. For Indian students the most dependable options are university awards for fee-paying students, which reduce or waive tuition but do not cover living costs.

Residence permit for higher education studies
Non-EU students studying for longer than three months need a residence permit from the Swedish Migration Agency. You can only apply once you are finally admitted and have paid any required tuition.
Secure final admission to a full-time programme, which in Sweden means 30 credits per semester.
Fee-paying students must pay the required tuition instalment before submitting the permit application.
Make sure your passport is valid for the whole study period, because the permit cannot run beyond its expiry.
Show that you have at least the monthly maintenance amount for your full stay, through your own funds, a scholarship, a loan or an accepted sponsor.
Submit the application to the Swedish Migration Agency, upload clear documents and pay the fee; applying straight after payment gives the best chance of a decision before term.
Visit an embassy or service point for fingerprints and a photo so your residence permit card can be issued.
Report your address if required, keep within the work limit and meet the yearly credit targets so your permit can be extended.
Students can work in Sweden, but new rules from 11 June 2026 limit term-time hours for newly granted permits. Treat part-time pay as support, not as your main funding.
