Overview

Is the UK Right for You?

The UK is one of the most popular choices for Indian students, and for practical reasons. Most bachelor’s degrees in England take three years and most taught master’s degrees take twelve months, which cuts both tuition and living costs compared with longer programmes elsewhere. In the year ending December 2025, Indian nationals received 95,231 sponsored study visas as main applicants, more than any other nationality.

A good UK plan is built on course fit, a full-year budget and a clear career goal rather than rankings alone. The visa money rule is a minimum, not a real budget, and part-time work should cover everyday spending, not fees. With realistic planning, a UK degree followed by the Graduate Route can give you international study and early work experience in a relatively short time.

A strong fit if you are…

  • Graduates who want to upskill with a one-year master’s instead of spending two years abroad.
  • Class 12 students who are clear about their subject and want a focused three-year degree.
  • Students aiming for business, computing, data, engineering, law or creative careers with a defined goal.
  • Families who can fund the full first year through savings, loans or family support, treating scholarships as a bonus.
  • Students who want some international work experience after graduation through the Graduate Route.

Think twice if you are…

  • You are choosing mainly by university brand without checking modules, fees and graduate outcomes.
  • You expect part-time work to pay your tuition or to count towards the visa funds requirement.
  • You plan to bring a spouse or children on a taught course; most undergraduate and taught master’s students can no longer bring dependants.
  • Your main goal is a guaranteed job or long-term settlement, since the Graduate Route gives time to look for work but no sponsorship.
  • You want to live in London but have only budgeted for a smaller city.
Why UK

Why Indian Students Choose the UK

01

Shorter degrees

Three-year bachelor’s degrees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and one-year taught master’s mean fewer years of fees and rent. Most Scottish bachelor’s degrees take four years.

02

Huge range of institutions

Choose from world-leading research universities, strong city universities, career-focused modern universities and specialist schools for art, music, law or business.

03

Degrees employers recognise

UK qualifications are widely accepted by employers and universities around the world, whether you return to India, switch fields or continue studying.

04

Time to work after graduating

The Graduate Route lets eligible graduates stay and work or look for work without a sponsor: 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027, and three years after a PhD.

05

Scholarships worth applying for

Options range from fully funded Chevening awards to £10,000 GREAT Scholarships and merit awards offered directly by universities.

06

A large Indian community

Indian nationals are the biggest group of sponsored study visa holders, so most university cities have Indian food, festivals and active student societies.

FAQs

Study in UK: Common Questions

Is the UK a good choice for Indian students in 2026?
For many students, yes, especially those who want a shorter degree, a broad choice of universities and some time to work after graduating. It works best when the course, city and budget are chosen carefully rather than by ranking alone.
How much does it cost to study in the UK?
Tuition usually ranges from about £11,400 to £38,000 a year for undergraduate courses and £9,000 to £30,000 for postgraduate courses. A one-year master’s outside London often needs roughly £32,000–£35,000 for the first year all-in, and more in London.
Can I study in the UK without IELTS?
Sometimes. Many universities accept TOEFL, PTE or Duolingo, and some accept a strong Class 12 English score or a medium-of-instruction letter, but rules differ by university. You still need English evidence that the university accepts and records on your CAS.
Can I work while studying in the UK?
Most degree-level students can work up to 20 hours a week during term and full-time in official vacations. Earnings help with living costs but should not be relied on for tuition or visa funds.
How long can I stay after graduation?
Eligible graduates can apply for the Graduate Route, which lasts 18 months for applications made from 1 January 2027, or three years after a PhD. Staying longer usually means finding a sponsored job under the Skilled Worker route.
Is the January intake a good option?
It can be, if your exact course is offered in January. The choice is narrower than in September, so check availability early and plan your visa timeline around the later start.
Can I bring my family on a UK Student visa?
Most undergraduate and taught master’s students cannot bring dependants. The main exceptions are students on postgraduate research programmes such as PhDs and certain government-sponsored students.

Fees, fund requirements, visa rules and work rights on this page are indicative, based on publicly available information as of September 2026. They change often — always confirm with the university and the official immigration website before you apply, or ask our counsellors to check the latest position for you.
