Overview

Is the USA Right for You?

The United States hosts more international students than any other country, and India is now its largest source. Open Doors 2025 counted 1,177,766 international students in 2024/25, including 363,019 from India. More than half of all international students are in STEM fields, drawn by flexible degrees, well-funded research labs and practical training that connects study with real work in the student’s own field.

The USA is also one of the most expensive destinations, with no single national admission system and costs that vary widely by state, campus and city. Immigration policy has changed frequently since 2025, so plans need a financial buffer and some flexibility. Students who pick a right-fit institution, build a realistic budget and set a clear career goal tend to get the most from it.

A strong fit if you are…

  • Students targeting computer science, AI, data, engineering or research careers.
  • Students who want the flexibility to explore subjects before committing to a major.
  • Budget-aware Class 12 students open to starting at a community college and transferring (2+2).
  • Master’s applicants who want to use OPT or STEM OPT to gain US work experience after graduating.
  • Families prepared to compare universities carefully and plan around a full cost-of-attendance budget.

Think twice if you are…

  • Your top priority is the lowest-cost study destination.
  • You want one standard admission system with fixed cut-offs across all universities.
  • Your plan depends on long-term US work visas, which need an employer sponsor, involve a lottery and have seen major rule and fee changes since 2025.
  • You have no financial buffer for policy changes, visa delays or higher-than-expected city costs.
Why USA

Why Indian Students Choose the USA

01

Flexible degree structures

Many programmes let you combine core subjects, electives and concentrations, so you can shape your degree around your interests as you progress.

02

Research and lab depth

Research universities give undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students access to faculty-led projects, labs and specialist equipment.

03

More than one route to a degree

Community colleges let students complete the first two years at lower cost and then transfer to a four-year university to finish the bachelor’s.

04

Practical training built in

Eligible F-1 students can use CPT during their programme and up to 12 months of OPT, with a further 24 months for eligible STEM graduates.

05

Every type of institution

Choose from large public universities, research-intensive private universities, liberal arts colleges and institutes of technology.

06

The largest Indian student community

With India the top source country, most major campuses have active Indian student associations, familiar food and peer support.

Funding

Scholarships for Indian Students

Funding in the USA comes from universities, government-backed programmes and private foundations. Competition is strong, so build your budget assuming any award will be partial.

  • Check each university’s scholarship page while shortlisting; many awards follow admission deadlines.
  • For PhD and research master’s programmes, ask departments about assistantships.
  • Look at Indian trusts such as Inlaks and the Aga Khan Foundation alongside university awards.
  • Consider government schemes only if you meet every eligibility rule.
Eligibility

Admission Requirements

Undergraduate

After Class 12

  • Class 12 from a recognised board; around 80%+ (roughly a 3.0 GPA) is a safer benchmark at many public universities.
  • SAT or ACT where the university requires or recommends it, as policies differ widely.
  • English proficiency, often TOEFL 80+, IELTS 6.0–6.5+ or Duolingo 95–115+.
  • Application essays, recommendations and a record of activities and achievements.
  • Financial documents showing you can cover a year’s costs before the I-20 is issued.
Postgraduate

After Your Bachelor’s

  • A relevant bachelor’s degree, with a 3.0/4.0 GPA as the most common benchmark and some programmes considering 2.75.
  • Check whether the programme accepts a three-year Indian bachelor’s, as some still ask for 16 years of education.
  • GRE for some master’s and PhD programmes, and GMAT or GRE for MBAs and business master’s.
  • English proficiency, often TOEFL 79–90+, IELTS 6.0–7.0+ or Duolingo 105–125+.
  • Statement of purpose, resume and usually three letters of recommendation.
  • Research fit and faculty alignment for PhD applicants.
Language tests: Most universities accept TOEFL iBT, IELTS Academic and the Duolingo English Test, and many also accept PTE Academic. SAT, ACT, GRE and GMAT rules vary by university and even by department, so confirm on each programme page.

FAQs

Study in USA: Common Questions

Is the USA still a good option for Indian students in 2026?
For many students, yes. India was the largest source of international students in 2024/25 with 363,019 students, and the USA remains strong for STEM, research and practical training. Budget carefully and keep track of changing visa and work rules.
How much does it cost to study in the USA?
Average published tuition is about US$31,880 a year for out-of-state students at public universities and US$45,000 at private non-profits, plus roughly US$9,000–$18,000 for housing and food. Community colleges cost less, while private universities in big cities can exceed US$60,000 a year all-in.
Can I work part-time while studying in the USA?
Many F-1 students can work on campus up to 20 hours a week during semesters. Off-campus work is only allowed through authorised CPT or OPT.
Can I work in the USA after graduation?
Eligible graduates can apply for up to 12 months of OPT, and eligible STEM graduates can extend it by 24 months. Staying longer normally requires an employer-sponsored work visa, which is never guaranteed.
Do all US universities require SAT, GRE or GMAT?
No. Testing rules vary by university and even by department: some require scores, some make them optional and some do not use them at all. Always check the specific programme page.
Are community colleges a good route for Indian students?
They can be. Under the 2+2 model you complete two years at a community college and then transfer to a four-year university to finish your bachelor’s, often at a lower overall cost. Check transfer agreements before you enrol.
How early can I travel to the USA on an F-1 visa?
A new student visa can be issued up to 365 days before your programme starts, but you cannot enter the USA more than 30 days before the start date on your I-20.
Is a three-year Indian bachelor’s degree accepted for a US master’s?
Many US universities accept three-year Indian degrees, but some programmes still ask for 16 years of education or an extra year of study. Check each programme’s international admissions page before applying.

Fees, fund requirements, visa rules and work rights on this page are indicative, based on publicly available information as of September 2026. They change often — always confirm with the university and the official immigration website before you apply, or ask our counsellors to check the latest position for you.
