Overview

Is France Right for You?

France gives Indian students an unusual mix: low-fee public universities, highly selective grandes écoles and internationally known business schools. More than 1,600 programmes are taught fully or partly in English. France hosted about 443,500 international students in 2024–25 across roughly 3,500 higher education institutions.

The system rewards planning. Fees run from a few thousand euros a year at public universities to over €30,000 at top business schools. Most Indian students complete the Campus France (Études en France) procedure before applying for a visa, and some French makes daily life, internships and job hunting much easier.

A strong fit if you are…

  • You want a good-quality degree with more control over fees than in most English-speaking countries.
  • You are aiming for a career in business, luxury, hospitality, engineering, data or policy with a European angle.
  • You are willing to learn at least basic French for daily life, internships and jobs.
  • You can handle the Campus France and visa paperwork on time.
  • You value internships and practical experience as part of your degree.

Think twice if you are…

  • You want to study and live entirely in English, including in part-time jobs.
  • You expect part-time work to cover most of your tuition and living costs.
  • You are choosing a school by brand name without checking fees, recognition and job outcomes.
  • You are starting late, since many public university deadlines close months before the intake.
Why France

Why Indian Students Choose France

01

Wide choice of institutions

Public universities, grandes écoles, engineering schools and specialist institutes let you choose by budget and career goal instead of fitting one model.

02

Strong business schools

France is a leading destination for master’s degrees in management, finance, luxury and hospitality, from schools that global employers know well.

03

Controlled public fees

Public university fees for non-EU students stay far below typical UK or US levels, and some institutions reduce them further.

04

Internships built into degrees

Many programmes include internships, applied projects or alternance (work-study), so you graduate with real work experience.

05

Scholarships for Indian students

The Charpak programme is designed for Indian students, and Eiffel and institution-level awards are available alongside it.

06

Student support beyond Paris

Subsidised meals and transport discounts help with daily costs, and cities such as Lyon, Toulouse and Grenoble cost less than the capital.

Is France a good choice for Indian students?
It can be, especially for business, engineering, data, luxury and hospitality. It works best when you choose your course, budget, city and career plan together.
Do I need to know French to study in France?
Not for English-taught programmes, and there are more than 1,600 of them. French-taught courses need proof of French, and basic French helps a lot with daily life and jobs.
Can I study in France without IELTS?
Some schools accept another English test, a medium-of-instruction certificate or an interview instead. There is no country-wide waiver, so check each programme’s language rules.
How much money do I need to show for the visa?
From 1 August 2026, students must show at least €877.50 a month for living costs, plus proof that first-year tuition is funded. Many students, especially in Paris, will need more than this minimum in practice.
What scholarships can Indian students apply for?

Can I stay in France after graduation?
Eligible graduates can apply for a 12-month permit to look for work or start a business. Eligible Indian master’s graduates may also get a one-year post-study visa that can be renewed once, subject to current rules.
Is France cheaper than the UK or USA?
Often, yes, at public universities and in regional cities. Top business schools in Paris can cost as much as UK programmes, so compare the total cost programme by programme.
