Overview

Is Japan Right for You?

Japan offers something few study destinations can: top research universities where national tuition is the same for Japanese and international students, backed by well-funded government scholarships. Engineering, robotics, materials science and computer science are traditional strengths, and English-taught programmes have grown steadily, especially at master’s and PhD level. For Indian students with strong academics, it can be one of the best-value options in Asia.

Language is the real deciding factor. You can complete many graduate degrees in English, but part-time jobs, everyday life and most careers after graduation work far better with Japanese. The visa route runs through a Certificate of Eligibility that your university obtains for you, and the academic year starts in April, so timelines differ from the UK or US.

A strong fit if you are…

  • Students aiming at engineering, robotics, materials science or research careers.
  • Master’s and PhD applicants who want to work closely with a professor in a research lab.
  • Academically strong applicants who can compete for MEXT scholarships.
  • Students willing to learn Japanese seriously for jobs and daily life.
  • Those who value safety, structure and a high quality of life.

Think twice if you are…

  • If you do not plan to learn Japanese, since part-time jobs and most careers depend on it.
  • If you want a quick one-year master’s, as most Japanese master’s take two years.
  • If you need part-time earnings to cover fees; the 28-hour cap and typical wages only cover part of living costs.
  • If you prefer Western-style admissions, since some routes involve the EJU, supervisor contact and April starts.
